One of the things that’s been annoying me at my mother’s house has been the noise from the toilet.
Everytime you flush it, you would get an awful drone through the pipes which went around the entire upper floors whilst the tank was refilling. Really annoying
The video below gives an example of the sound. I had bought a replacement Water inlet valve, as I had seen this repair done to stop it. I managed to luck out however, and some how sorted it. Not sure if it’s due to a loose washer or fitting
Where the water fills in I pulled off the upper cover. I then put my finger over this and the noise stopped. I can only assume it forced something back in place as it was under pressure. I then replaced the cover. Might be worth a quick try before dismantling your toilet.
Mine worked for a while, but it crept up again, hence the continuation of this post below
ORIGINAL NOISE FROM TOILET
Updated : 10/08/24
I originally wrote this post, but the noise started creeping again since I never replaced the washer when I first wrote this post, as I managed to figure out a way to silence the noise. Basically blocking the top port of the valve where the water comes out. Couldn’t figure out why when first did it, but after repairing the toilet today my best guess is that it acts like a valve the way the Diaphragm is intended and halts the flow of water by sealing it. I wrote a quick document below about the fix, as the toile tis now repaired
How I fixed the toilet stopping it droning
The procedure for fixing the droning noise was simple. I purchased a compatible inlet valve diaphragm washer online, and then went about replacing the old one in the toilet
- First things first. I turned off the cold water supply to the toilet
- After this I flushed the toilet to empty the water tank. I’m not sure if the vacuum system is broke, as there’s water in the mechanism that sucks the water down.

- I then undid the nut on the cold water inlet (to loosen turn turning towards the wall)

- After this I loosen the nut support the ballvalve in the tank (again turning towards the wall).you can see the water port in the picture which I blocked off that would temporarily “stop” the noise

- After this I just replaced the internal washer inside the cup, with the replacement one. I didn’t remove any parts since the one I bought (which was compatible with Opella / Torbeck), had removeable parts. I just fit the little bit inside a gap, then had the pointy bit heading towards the inlet. It was hard to explain but where the water comes in there’s a rubber membrane. This is where the pointy bit goes into which is what stops the water from coming in when there’s enough pressure. The rod on the ballalve forces it back
No pictures sorry
- The old washer

Et voila, my droning toilet is now fixed.
Afterthoughts on the repair
Can’t really say I’m fond on the design of the seals, I reckon you could 3d print a plunger and seal which would do both features at once. Might do this since a 3D printed part would probably be more reliable. The parts themselves are cheap enough anyway if you need to repair them, so can easily buy some more
